" Shannon & Lance G – The Road – Hot Spot Records – Local blues lovers will jump for joy when they get their hands on this fine group of songs by this husband and wife team. We’ve known them for years and used to enjoy the Sunday jams they hosted, so this was a welcome addition to our library. Lance’s guitar playing has been a thrill to hear, and Shannon has the chops to deliver the goods. With Lance playing lead guitar, Shannon’s vocals, Dan Cooper on bass, and Jimmy Rose on drums, several special guests add to the mix, with Mark May playing lead on “The Road” and several other cuts, Barry Seelen on keyboards, Jim Brady on trumpet, Bobby Lonero on guitar for one cut and Cameron Scott on sax, the quality is superb. All songs are originals except the Bad Company tune “Silver, Blue and Gold” written by Paul Rodgers, which Shannon does justice to in her own fine form. The opening cut “Loves Highway” comes out swinging, and the title cut is a fine example of the creative songwriting this talented couple does. There’s even a tribute to our good friends, James “The Blues Hound” Nagel and his foxy wife, Colleen, called, of course, “The Blueshound”. I think one of the songs was written about me, called “Dirty Mind”, and the biker’s anthem “Me And My Harley” should be a real hit with their biker friends. My personal favorite is “Fly Away”, a soulful ballad that Shannon puts her heart and soul into, and “Modern Day Blues” is a heart-pumping rocker that will jump-start the dead. This is a fine collection of music and should make them a lot of new fans with the exposure it’s getting on KPFT. Find out more at the web site, at www.shannonlanceg.com"

The musical genrein and of itself borders on the cliche', and yet these performers surrounded by players that and trust have produced and effort of remarkable scope. The track "One Fine Fine" is funky, soulful groovaliciousness, while the gospel like voiced title track features some masterful call and response guitar work from producer Mark May. Shannon ably handles the vocal chores on most of the album, but "The Bluehound" and "Me & My Harley" give Lance the opportunity to take the vocal lead as well providing some competant slide guitarwork. The song "Love" features some of Lance's finest guitar moments as well as some excellent solos from Cameron Scott on saxophone and Jim Brady on muted trumpet. The album closes with the pleasant instrumental "Peace, Love, & Hope" which serves as sort of a coda for this album that was clearly fashioned with so much love and care. |
